Kent Wildlife Trust has begun a progressive new project to reverse the decline in grassland, wetland and woodland habitats in river catchments across Kent.
The project has been funded by Biffa Award, a multi-million pound environment fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT), which utilises landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services.
The ‘East of Eden’ project will grow local enthusiasm, knowledge and skills through a suite of demonstration restoration sites and local events across the River Eden catchment and eastwards into the Medway and Rother River Catchments.
At least 10 hectares of grassland, 5 woodland sites and 5 wetland scrapes or ponds will be enhanced across these river’s networks of Local Wildlife Sites by local volunteer-driven restoration work. This will increase habitat availability and connectivity for wildlife, whilst helping store atmospheric carbon and alleviate the impacts of flooding and poor water quality.
A launch event is being held from 6:30 to 9:00pm, Tuesday 4th August 2015 at The Eden Centre, Edenbridge. A talk on the value of habitats in and around Kent’s rivers will be followed by a brief summary of the project and information about how you can get involved.
