About the reserve

The two former chalk pits supplied the raw materials to the brick and cement works near Eccles. Once abandoned, in the early 20th century, the pits developed considerable wildlife interest, leading to their notification as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

As well as supporting a wide range of wildlife, the pits have significant geological interest and are internationally important for late Cretaceous fossil found while the pits were being worked.

As they are former quarries, there is no public access due to presence of unprotected cliff edges.
