This lovable clan migrate around several reserves throughout the year led by their leader, Skittles.
Boss cow
Boss Cow is the undisputed and charming leader of this Dexter cattle herd, with a very impressive set of horns. Despite this appearance, Boss Cow has a very docile temperament. You can spot Boss Cow in the picture of the herd lying down at the bottom of this page, on the far right.
Second in command is a little cow with a “small dog complex” (on right in the top photo), perfectly calm when happily out grazing but when it comes to moving into a new field, she likes nothing better than to dig at the strange, new turf with her horns before realizing that it really isn’t such a bad place to be after all.
Where now Brown Cow?
This is the smallest cow in the herd, often found a little way off from the others, keeping herself to herself. Brown Cow is quiet and can often be found in the company of Scaredy Cow. You can see Boss Cow in the striking profile picture of her at the bottom of this page.
Scaredy Cow
Scaredy Cow puts on a brave face but, on the day we moved the herd across a narrow country lane, as the rest of the herd happily crossed the road to get to the other side, Scaredy Cow wasn’t so keen. She walked right up to the edge of the tarmac, tested it with a hoof, like it was the cold ocean on a winter day, then turned around and went back, bellowing at her friends to come back and join her.
